Surrey, Vancouver’s thriving suburb 35 minutes southeast of downtown, celebrates its fourth annual WinterFest in February. Just 15 minutes directly east of downtown Vancouver, Burnaby is home to the painstakingly restored CW Parker Carousel, located at Burnaby Village Museum. As winter descends on British Columbia’s scenic Central and Eastern Regions, charming towns wake to powdered slopes and the fun begins. Called Habour City, Vancouver Island’s Nanaimo is less than two hours north of Victoria and equally close to the pristine Pacific Ocean beaches northwest in Tofino. Because of the central location on Vancouver Island, Nanaimo is also referred to as the Hub City. Nanaimo Harbourfront is at the center of downtown Nanaimo and a convenient ferry ride across the Straight of Georgia from Vancouver.

The New Year sees the exhibits Untrue North and Sleep of Reason. The Yukon Arts Center hosts the Whitehorse 2011 Longest Night celebration on December 20th and 21st. This community gathering features a collection of local and national performers, storytellers and musicians to honor the longest night of the year.

The Yukon Film Society celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Available Light Film Festival February 2012. Look for screening of more than 30 films from February 6th to 12th, along with special anniversary events. See cutting-edge films and rub shoulders with film buffs and industry professionals at the Available Light Film Festival.

Whitehorse is the finish line for the 2012 1,000-mile Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race. Mushers start their quest from Fairbanks, Alaska on February 4th, with the finish and awards in Whitehorse on February 18th. This race across the Yukon wilderness is an amazing sight to witness as 14 dog teams pull their musher through mountains and across rivers – an authentic Canadian experience.

British Columbia’s Prince George is a day’s drive south of Whitehorse - don’t expect the weather to warm-up in winter, but expect more fun and adventure. A flight into Prince George Airport makes sense for most visitors to avoid long distance driving. Get ready for great days on the slopes at Powder King or join Hockey fans cheering on the WHL Prince George Cougars at the CN Center. Winter is great fun in Northern British Columbia.
